Vintage Binocular Repair:
If you have old, vintage binocular pairs, like military or war binos, dating back to even a century ago, even those kinds of binos can be fixed or repaired. There are many optical repair shops that offer that solution worldwide.
It is especially rare to own a vintage binocular set. Do check the credibility and reviews of a shop claiming to fix vintage binos – you do not want to get your historical artefact ruined by a noob!
Binocular Repair Manual:
When you buy a particular pair of binoculars, a good set usually comes with a Binocular Repair Manual. In case of any issue, you should consult this manual first and foremost to seek the right solution for Binocular Repair.
Most faulty cases are resolved right there and then by consulting the Repair Manual. You actually need to identify the sort of issue you are facing to get the required solution. You may need a few repair tools, though.
Maybe you are facing trouble operating your pair of Binoculars just because you are not holding them correctly. You need to hold your binoculars steadily to view an image with perfect clarity. Here are 7 simple techniques for holding binoculars steady. You will be surprised by how the simplest of techniques can actually save you a lot of added hassle!
Sometimes, Binoculars do not require any essential repair service. They just need a good cleaning of the parts, especially if the pair does not have proofing, to function properly. It might gather dust particles or be more prone to weather changes due to this, after a certain period of time.
If you want to clean your Binoculars but have no proper idea on how to do so, here is our illustrated guide on cleaning binoculars inside, outside and safe from fungus. Give it a read to clean binocular yourself.
If after cleaning, you are still facing some issue, then stick to this guide. We might just be getting there towards the solution for whatever is bothering you in having a good experience with the binos.
How to fix binoculars yourself? You might be having issues focusing with the binos but need some guidance on how to do so. This might include avoiding double vision, diopter adjustment, etc.
Double vision usually occurs due to faulty collimation (a term associated with how light enters or exits the lens). Diopter adjustment requires fixing focus of both lenses for individual eyes by the diopter knobs.
Check out our separate guides on fixing double vision in binoculars, binoculars collimation issues and solution, adjusting binoculars focus with diopter in 6 easy steps.
DIY Ideas for Binocular Repair:
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ideas are essentially easy and fun to fix or reuse anything. Who says Binoculars cannot be fixed at home? There are always easier ways to resolve an issue. So, why not try at home if you think you can repair your set easily?
For a complete step by step guide on repairing binoculars at home, you can read up on our article that covers all essential steps. The article has all basic instructions on repairing lenses, focusing knob or prisms, including video tutorials, to help you repair binoculars at home without spending too much. Go check it out now!
Here are some more fool-proof DIY ideas that are easy to follow if you have a knack of handling your pair of Binoculars and know the basics of the equipment!
#1 DIY Monocular MOD/Hack
If you have a cheap or old set of binos that just do not seem to focus perfectly or are broken, then here’s a hack. Convert or modify a cheap set of binoculars into 2 Single Monoculars!
Here’s what you will need:
- A pair of (broken/cheap/old) binos
That’s all it!
Instead of throwing them away, use this collimation or alignment flaw by separating the two tube-like lenses (if not already broken). Focus and use each lens, instead of fretting over diopter adjustment of the two lenses.
This way you can zoom in on the view with the aid of your DIY Monocular!
Monoculars are less bulky, quite handy and easier to carry than regular binos. Also, this hack saves your extra cash from wastage on repair service of a cheap set.
If you have an advanced or slightly higher-end bino, I will suggest you get it checked by an optic expert rather than applying this hack for reusing.
#2 Hack Binoculars to a Digital Camera
Ever wanted your camera to zoom in more perfectly and take a better shot at the view? Well, here’s a DIY Hack for you. Turn your Binocular lens to a Digital Camera.
Here’s what you will need:
- PVC pipe
- Electrical Tape
- Rubber Band
- Tripod Stand
Detach the Objective lens of your binoculars. Cut out a circular ring from the PVC pipe, large enough to fit the lens in it. This should be adjusted in such a way that the lens does not fall out of the PVC pipe ring. Use Electrical Tape for sealing the lens to the ring.
Tape in a rubber band to one side of the PVC pipe ring for hanging the lens to the bolt-on your tripod stand. You can use a bolt to set it up with the camera if you do not want to use a tripod stand.
The rubber band can also be used to simply adjust the DIY lens to the camera. This allows you to zoom in on objects more closely without actually buying an expensive camera lens!
These were some of the DIY hacks for reusing an existing pair of binocular lenses.
But take note if you are not a pro with your set, better not mess around with the Binocs, especially the lenses and prisms! Only experiment with your pair if you have got the knack for it. Do not mess with your pair, especially if it is an expensive one.
You might ruin your binos set rather than fixing it if you are unaware of the pros and cons, and dos and don’ts, in an attempt to experiment with repairing your set.
Seek a professional optical expert in serious repair issues that are not easily fixable at home.
How Much Does a Repair Service Cost?
The best brands or companies will give you a free estimate of what needs to be done for repairing on request. Contact your binos’ manufacturer, especially if you still have warranty left to avail it.
Most repair services including basic collimation, assembly and testing start at a price of $30 or £30.
If your binos require complete dissembling of the pair and fixing prisms, it would cost a bit higher. This includes dissembling, cleaning (both internal and external) and lubrication of mechanical parts, collimation, minor repair fixtures, reassembling and testing of your binocular pairs. Usually, the starting cost of this is $50 or £40.
The cost also ranges according to the type of prism used in binocular; Roof prisms repairs cost more than Porro prisms.
If you want to get water or weatherproofing for the binoculars, it usually includes nitrogen gas purging. This is relatively less expensive, costing about 10-20 dollars or £20/£10.
The cost and expenditure of your Binoculars’ Repair service depend on the issue at hand, as well as the type and complexity of your pair. But rest assured, any issue can be resolved unless the Binocular pair needs a total replacement!
In that case, you should definitely invest in a new pair than wasting repair service money on the existing one.
